Situated in South Caucasus, Georgia falls between the latitudes of 41 degrees and 44 degrees North, and longitudes 40 degrees and 47 degrees East, with an area of 67,900 sq kilometers.

The general terrain of the region is mountainous and the Likhi Range runs right through the middle of the country, dividing it into two halves. The western portion of Georgia was previously known as Colchish and the eastern plateau was called Iberia. The complex geography of the region means that the mountains have also isolated the northern region of Svaneti from the rest of the country. The extensive and mighty Greater Caucasus Mountain Range forms the northern border of Georgia and as one travels down the main road, one can get a panoramic view of the mountain range is it winds its way to the Russian territory, following the Roki Tunnel between Shida Kartli and North Ossetai and the Darial Gorge, in the region of Khevi. The historic Roki Tunnel was important for the Russian military in the 2008 South Ossetia war as it is the only direct route through the Caucasus Mountains. On the other hand, one can see the Lesser Caucasus Mountains forming the Southern boundary, which is significantly lower in height than the Greater Caucasus, the highest peaks of which rise more than 5000 meters above the sea level.
